Dan Arvizu, National Renewable Energy Laboratory director since 2005 and former CTO with CH2M HILL, will serve a six-year term on the National Science Board, four days after the U.S. Senate confirmed President Barack Obama“™s appointment of Arvizu to a seat on the board.

Arvizu will join the 25-member board in advising the president and Congress on science and engineering issues, fulfilling a term that will end in May 2016. He was first appointed to the National Science Board in 2004, chairing the Audit and Oversight Committee for four years and co-chairing the NSB Task Force on Building a Sustainable Energy Future. In addition to his work with NREL and CH2M HILL, Arvizu spent more than 20 years working with Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M. He sits on the board and advisory panel of organizations including the Stanford University Precourt Energy advisory board and the Colorado Renewable Energy Authority board of directors.

“I am deeply honored to be confirmed as a member of the National Science Board,” Arvizu said. “The board plays a vital role in setting national science policy, promoting science, technology, engineering and math education, and in furthering the goal of a clean energy future.”

Arvizu has received numerous honors for his work-he was inducted into the Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Conference Hall of Fame in 2008 and was named the Hispanic Scientist of the year in 2010 by the Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa, Fla.
