British intelligence officials hacked into a website run by an al-Qaida leader to substitute bomb-making plans with a cupcake recipe, The Daily Telegraph reports.
“Operation Cupcake” was undertaken by MI6 and and Britain’s Government Communications Headquarters to disrupt efforts by al-Qaida to recruit terrorists-to-be with the English-language Inspire magazine, the Telegraph said.
Those who tried to download instructions on how to make a lethal pipe bomb with household items instead got garbled code that was a page of recipes from the Ellen Degeneres Show“™s “Best Cupcakes in America,” the Telegraph said.
The hacked pipe bomb PDF on Inspire“™s site was available on Archive.org before it was replaced by the message “The item is not available due to issues with the item’s content,“ The Washington Post said.
M16 also removed a piece titled “What to Expect in Jihad,” written by now-deceased al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, and his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri, the Telegraph said.
