Lockheed Martin is the firm behind the first space-based infrared system geosynchronous spacecraft that was recently successfully launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla.
The spacecraft is the most advanced military infrared satellite ever developed and will deliver improved missile warning capabilities for the U.S.
The spacecraft includes sophisticated scanning and staring sensors that will deliver improved infrared sensitivity. Both sensors will enhance early warning of missile launches around the earth, support the ballistic missile defense system, greatly expand technical intelligence gathering capability and bolster situational awareness for warfighters on the battlefield.
Brig. Gen. (select) Roger W. Teague attributed the launch to hard work, dedication and expertise of the government and SBIRS team. The general explained what this spacecraft means to the U.S. security, saying “SBIRS GEO-1 represents the dawn of a new era in the overhead persistent infrared surveillance that will greatly improve our national security for years to come.“
