China urgently needs to collaborate with the United States to combat cyber crime, an official of the Ministry of Public Security said.

Gu Jian, vice director of the ministry’s network security protection bureau, said since computer crimes were included in China’s Criminal Law last year, police have dismantled more than 80 gangs involved in cyber crime, China.org.cn reports.

According to Jian, China’s government websites are frequently attacked, mostly by adversaries abroad. Eighty percent of computers in China with access to the Internet have also been controlled by botnets at some point, he added.

Because of the transnational nature of cyber crime, it is in every country’s interest to counter these threats together and to cooperate in cracking down on this type of crime, Jian said. However, because different countries have different laws, cooperation in policing criminal cyber activities is difficult, he added.

The director called for boosting global cooperation by prioritizing cases where a certain Internet activity is illegal in more than one country, enhancing bilateral agreements on providing judicial assistance in prosecuting cyber crime, and resolving issues in criminal proceedings related to collecting evidence from different countries.
