The 2010 holiday shopping season has started with a 13-percent increase over last year, and $11.64 billion has been spent online for the season-to-date.
Black Friday was the heaviest online spending day to date in 2010, with $648 million in online sales and a 9 percent increase compared to Black Friday 2009. Thanksgiving Day reached $407 million in spending, with a 28-percent increase compared to Thanksgiving 2009.
Consumers explored Black Friday-themed websites to research in advance the day’s sales. BlackFriday.net was the most-visited coupon site on Black Friday with its 630,00 visitors. Overall, the number of visitors to coupon sites on Black Friday was 3.6 million.
Four retailers, Amazon Sites, Walmart, Target Corporation and Best Buy Sites, all surpassed 4 million U.S. visitors on Black Friday. Amazon Sites was the most-visited retail website on Black Friday.
