Last week, the FBI announced indictments against individuals allegedly involved in the distribution of the WinFixer family of malware. The WinFixed malware is fake anti-virus software, which claims a false security benefit for paying for the service.
“The Microsoft Malware Protection Center provided support for our Digital Crimes Unit in the investigation of WinFixer and would like to commend them as well as the Department of Justice and FBI for their actions in helping to protect our customers,” Jeff Williams, Principal Group Program Manager, MMPC, wrote in blog post.
The 3 alleged perpetrators are charged with disseminating malware that is believed to have caused $100 million in losses to victims around the globe.
“Two of the three defendants indicted in this case are non-U.S. residents, accused of working with an Ohio resident to perpetrate the scheme,” Tim Cranton, Associate General Counsel, Microsoft Digital Crimes Unit, wrote in a blog post. “This illustrates how cybercrime has become global. Boundaries and jurisdictions are irrelevant to cyber-criminals. The problem can“™t be tackled by any single entity working alone; strong cooperation is needed among governments, law enforcement and technology companies.”
