Robert Carey will leave his post as the Department of Navy’s Chief Information Officer by the end of the summer at the behest of Undersecretary of the Navy Robert Work.
The new CIO has not yet been selected, but Carey indicated he would assist Work in his search.
Carey joined the DON in 2000 as e-business team leader, before being promoted Director of the Smart Card Office, then deputy CIO before landing the CIO role four years ago.
As CIO, Carey was an advocate for cybersecurity education across the Navy. He was known for looking to incorporate new media into the Navy’s technology practice. He also led strategies to develop and use technology and IT systems for the Navy-Marine Corps.
Carey will also resign his position of co-chair of the Federal CIO Council's Information Security and Identity Management Committee.
