Commercial firms that form the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee are looking to develop better methods for sharing information on cybersecurity threats, according to SpaceNews.
The group started a pilot program at the beginning of this week to develop a repository of cyber threat information that is sector specific.
NSTAC is currently made up of executives from IT, telecommunications, network service providers, finance and aerospace. The list of threats will contain a list of individuals to contact at the companies involved in the project and will provide a receipt for submitted information.
“Enhanced space situational awareness will provide a clear and accurate understanding of what is happening in the environment and allow timely and successful decision-making over a broad range of scenarios,“ Kay Sears, president of Intelsat General Corp. of Bethesda, Md., and NSTAC co-chairwoman, said at the National Space Symposium.
The group hopes to eventually form a 24/7 Joint Coordinating Center that would help government and industry to mitigate, respond and prevent cyber threats.
“The Joint Coordinating Center will be an authoritative venue for operational coordination between government representatives and private-sector owners and operators of critical infrastructure and key resources across all sectors,“ Sears said. “The threat picture has really expanded, and cyber is at the foundation.“
