Indian cybersecurity professionals have set baited traps to track Chinese hackers attempting to breach Indian government networks, according to a report in The Times of India. The recent “Shadow in the Cloud” report by the Munk Research Center at the University of Toronto, found a number of attacks targeting Indian government networks, including national security information.
However, Indian cyber professionals are already taking steps to trace the threat. Earlier this year, the Indian government reported that it was hit in a series of cyber probes on government networks that appeared to emanate from China. Since that time, Indian cyber warriors have been working tirelessly to monitor their networks and detect cyber probes.
In an effort to trace the attacks, India’s cyber guardians set up traps on targeted servers that would allow them to trace any attacks to the source.
Sachin Pilot, minister of state for IT and telecommunications, said “We need to be extra vigilant about cyber terrorism, because this can inflict attacks of an assymetric nature, and is therefore that much more dangerous.”
According to report, the Indian government efforts have been relatively successful. CERT India has also provided suggestions to guard against the growing threat from cyber espionage.
While India is continuing to prepare defensively, cyber warfare is not yet a central strategic doctrine of its armed forces.
