Earlier this week, The New New Internet reported that Vodaphone Spain has shipped two pre-infected smartphones to security researchers at Panda Security and S21Sec. After each incident, a Vodaphone Spain spokesman claimed that the incidents were isolated.
Late yesterday, however, the company admitted to the Spanish press, that it shipped 3,000 smartphones that may be infected with Mariposa botnet malware. The admission came following a meeting between Vodaphone officials and reps of Panda Security.
A researcher working at PandaLabs on the project to El Reg that Vodaphone will replace HTC Magic smartphone microSD cards of 3,000 phones because they believe them to be infected with malware.
