During the RSA conference in California this week, international cyber experts have called for increased international cooperation of cybersecurity issues. Information sharing is one of the principle methods that can be used to combat cyber attacks, as was recently demonstrated in the dismantling of the Mariposa botnet.
“It is pure nonsense to attempt to handle cyberscecurity only at a national level, but information sharing across borders is still not as good as it needs to be,” said Patrick Pailloux, general director of the French Network Information Security Agency.
According to Phil Reitinger of DHS, any domestic cybersecurity plans must include an international component to be effective. When he was named to the position of cybersecurity coordinator, Howard Schmidt said that one of his priorities was to strengthen international partnerships.
This focus on international cooperation has also been part of the national cybersecurity review order by President Obama in February. Christopher Painter, special advisor to the president for cybersecurity, said “The review itself was not done in isolation, but in collaboration with Canada, France, Australia and others.”
Deborah Anton, assistant secretary for e-security policy and co-ordination in the Australian Attorney General’s Department, said that governments need to share best practices for cybersecurity so that nations can learn from one another.
