The South Korean government is preparing to make a bid to host a UN run cybersecurity organization, according to an article on JoongAng Daily. An anonymous source in the Ministry of Public Administration and Security told the paper that Korea is currently researching cybersecurity issues and is looking to make a bid for the organization.
The source said that authorities are “cooperating with the presidential office and relevant government organizations as well as academia to examine how the world body plans to tackle security issues on the Web and how different countries are handling the issues at present.“
A formal request to host the organization is expected to be made by President Lee Myung-bak when he attends the G-20 Summit this coming November, which will be held in Seoul. The various government agencies will finish their research in the first half of 2010 and then submit their plans on how to best propose that South Korea be the headquarters for the UN cyber body.
“International cooperation on cyber security is pretty urgent,“ the source said. “So there won“™t be much difficulty in inducing a consensus among the leaders on the need for such an organization.“
