Over the weekend, Argentine hackers broke into the website of Falkland Islands’ Penguin News and placed an Argentine flag on the homepage. The hackers also posted a protesting note with bullet points claiming that the Falkland Islands should be part of Argentina, according to an article on The Register.co.uk.
The hack also included an audio recording of March of the Malvinas. The bullet points (in Spanish) claim that the Falklands belong to Argentina because they were inherited from Spain and the viceroy of Rio de la Plata and because Argentina is the country closest to the Falklands.
The hack seems to be related to a recent spate between the British and Argentina over a possible oil rig in the Falklands. According to an article in this weeks edition of The Economist, the government of Argentina has threatened to ban any British companies who take part in the oil venture from doing business in Argentina. Additionally, Argentina said that any ships traveling through the straits separating Argentina and the Falklands would need to acquire special permission.
Back in the 1980s, Britain and Argentina fought a war over the Falklands.
