Cisco announced earlier this week the successful in-orbit test of its Internet Routing in Space (IRIS) technology. The commercial IP router in space was launched aboard Intelsat’s IS-14 GEO satellite.
The IRIS program is designed to build a router that is radiation tolerant for use in space. If successful the new technology could be put to use throughout the federal government. The IRIS program will also allow mobile operations as users will be able to connect to the network from anywhere.
Steven Boutelle, VP of CISCO’s Global Government Solutions Group, said “This milestone is another step in our strategy to expand borderless networks into space and redefine how satellite communications are delivered. This technology can help transform satellite communications around the world by reducing latency and increasing the efficiency.”Â
