We called him one of the 20 people to watch in 2009, and Julius Genachowski is already proving us right: President-elect Barack Obama has just nominated Genachowski, a co-founder and managing director of Rock Creek Ventures and former Harvard Law School classmate of Obama’s, to be the next chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. Genachowski, who played a leading role in shaping the president-elect’s technology strategy during the campaign, would take over from current FCC Chairman Kevin J. Martin.
If his appointment is approved by the Senate, Genachowski would face several key challenges in his new role. Among them: The issue of net neutrality, overseeing the switch to all-digital broadcast television, and implementing Obama’s call to greater broadband access nationwide. Industry experts say Genachowski is ready to meet such challenges head-on.
“Julius will be a terrific leader to carry forth President-elect Obama’s vision for ensuring America’s competitiveness in the global economy,” says Aneesh Chopra, Virginia’s Secretary of Technology, who appeared with Genachowski at a recent POC event. “He has the right blend of public and private sector leadership to steward the FCC during this important period for telecommunications policy,” adds Chopra.
