2 Million Minutes: A Global Examination
Are US Students falling behind in the flat world?
Exclusive interview: ExecutiveBiz interviewed producer Bob Compton, creator of the provocative documentary “Two Million Minutes”.
From the moment a student completes 8th grade the clock starts ticking and they have roughly 2 million minutes until they complete high school. Those million minutes are the most critical for the student and for the countries offering the educational system.
Compton compares and contrasts 6 accomplished students from China, India and the United States and their educational systems. Commentary offered by authorities such as former labor secretary Robert Reich, Economist Richard Freeman and Venture capitalist Tim Draper.
Watch the trailer.
A Green Sun is Rising in the Federal Space
Come and hear computer pioneer and work station legend Scott McNealy speak on May 6th at the Potomac Officers Club at the Tyson’s Ritz Carlton. New membership applicationss now being accepted or existing members can register here.
Sun sits at the confluence of several important trends he and Sun have led the effort towards blade servers and virtualization. Both of these technologies are used to reduce space, materials, energy (Think Green) and cost when developing scaled computing services. They have embraced the reduction of resource consumption in highly reliable and massively scaled operations. McNealy is personally focused on how Sun applies their technology to Civilian and Defense Government requirements. If you are a Sun partner, competitor or just interested – you need to hear the always energetic and controversial Scott McNealy.

Filmmaker
2 Million Minutes
Bob Compton, an Indianapolis venture-capitalist-turned-filmmaker, has produced a provocative new documentary called “2 Million Minutes” that looks at how American education falls short in today’s global economy.
How a high school student spends their Two Million Minutes - in class, at home studying, playing sports, working, sleeping, on Facebook or just goofing off -- will affect their economic prospects for the rest of their lives. The film’s intention is to show how teenagers in the three countries (US, India, and China) allocate the same amount of time in high school.
After spending twenty months making the powerful finished product, it provides insight into the changing nature of competition in a technology-based world.

A 1.0 Business Case for Government Web 2.0 Adoption
April 20, 2008 by Brian Lustig
For all its transformative potential, future adoption of Web 2.0 within the Federal government rests on the same business case requirements as any other product or service. And while enterprise wikis and secure video sharing applications are gaining converts in civilian, intelligence and defense organizations, decision makers in the upper echelons are still looking for strong cost and efficiency arguments to turn Web 2.0 applications from “nice to have” to “need to have.”

Joe Ragan’s transformative leadership at GTSI
April 16, 2008 by Lisa Singh
Over the last few years, GTSI — an enterprise solutions and services provider to the government — has been a company in transition, moving from its old role of being a traditional government reseller of IT products into a total solutions provider. Today, the company is well-positioned to go out and grow the services business. A big part of that growth can be credited to Joe Ragan, and his leadership as CFO. Ragan recently talked with us about the joys and challenges of his new role as CFO, how he’s help turn GTSI around, and what hot trends might very well shape public companies in the DC area and beyond.

Benchmarking Green IT in offing for Federal Agencies?
April 15, 2008 by Brian Lustig
Now five years old, the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) elicits varied reactions among Federal agency decision makers and the contractor community. While some rightly argue there is ample room for improvement in terms of how well the directive is protecting the government’s information assets, there is also no questioning it has led to tangible security improvements to date.
